The 2024 edition of IPIE's annual expert survey provides the baseline against which the 2025 survey's findings of intensifying pessimism should be read. Covering researchers across multiple continents and disciplinary backgrounds, the 2024 survey documents expert assessment of the information environment at a moment of acute electoral pressure — 2024 was the largest democratic election year in history — and captures both the specific concerns about AI-enabled disinformation that were emerging and the longer-standing structural concerns about platform accountability.
The longitudinal value of the IPIE expert survey series is that it tracks how expert assessment evolves year-on-year — revealing not just what researchers think at any given moment but how their views are changing and in what direction. For practitioners and policymakers who want to understand how the research community's assessment of the information environment has shifted across the 2023–2025 period, the three annual surveys together constitute the most comprehensive available longitudinal record. The 2024 survey is the essential middle entry in that series.
